Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Well, he's famous for being the first to circumnavigate the globe, which is why he's considered a famous explorer!. He might have been considered a lunatic as many didn't expect there to be a westward route to the Spice Islands (Indonesia)!. However he proved wrong by being the first to sail past the southern tip of South America (now known as the Strait of Magellan)!. He didn't finish the job he started as he was killed in the Philippines after becoming involved in the native politics!. His crew finished their sailing around the world without him!.
