As an old git i can genuinely say that Harold Wilson was a great and much maligned prime minister!. The devaluation of the pound was forced on the British goverment by the Americans, he resigned as unlike most politicians he actually did what he said he would do!. He managed despite huge American pressure to keep Britain out of the war in Vietnam and ensured that Britain had at least a fighting chance of moderising its industry which had stultified since the second world war!. He gave Britain a sense of hope at a time the country was broke and despite having only a tiny majority in parliament was able to redress many social ills!. The only thing i personally have against H!.W is he allowed the precident of charges for prescriptions for which the then minister of health K!.Robinson resigned!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Wilson was a competent, but not great Prime Minister; much like Tony Blair I suppose!. Despite the pound's devaluation, the economy was generally in a healthy state during his first administration, and in 1974 he inherited problems left over from the Heath administration!. Unfortunately for Labour, he retired early, in 1976!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on your point of view yes in some respects he was one of the greatest but in others not certainly the way he refused to join the Vietnam War was an excellent decision and the open university is an excellent place to learn from your own home and still have your qualifications recognised but in other ways he was not

Harold Wilson wasn't in government long enough to do the country any good,I think that he had to resign because of illness!. any how most of the people who have answer this question, was probably not born when he was in government!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Previous answers are all valid!. He certainly was not even up there in the top 10!. He is the only PM that actually devalued the pound and insisted that the pound in our pocket would buy the same as it always had!. Proved to be utter rubbish!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Harold Wilson was a Marxist who made more visits to Moscow than any other Prime Minister in history, and on more than one occasion was warned by MI6/MI5 that they would organise a "coup" against him if he did not sever his ties with Moscow!.!.!.dats a factWww@QuestionHome@Com

There is a good deal of evidence that he WANTED Britain to join the Vietnam war!.
My impression of him is that he lived in a world of fantasy!. Not the last PM so to do, of course!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Those sound like excellent qualifications but I think the greatest was Winston Churchill!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He always struck me as a wannabee celebrity!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Was that all he did right!? What about the "wrongs" - Rhodesia, the Gannex raincoat affair and helping the miners bring the country almost to its knees!?!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

In short NO!Www@QuestionHome@Com
