Zwingli was born on January 1, 1484, near St!. Gall in Switzerland!. In 1506 he was ordained a Catholic priest!. By 1514 he had become a follower of the Dutch humanist, Erasmus!. By 1518, Zwingli was chosen to be a priest of the cathedral in Zurich!. He wanted to reform the Catholic Church and followed the humanists in the simple faith of the New Testament!. Zwingli believed in salvation by faith rather than by good works, the supremacy of the Bible as the sole source for Christianity, and the universal priesthood for all believers!. He differed from Martin Luther on several points!. Luther was mainly concerned about individual salvation while Zwingli was more concerned with the total rebirth of humanity and society!. By 1520, Zwingli had worked out a Protestant theology different from Luther's!. They met in 1529, in Marburg, Germany!. They differed on some topics such as the interpretation of Christ's presence in the Lord's Supper!. In 1523, the civil magistates of Zurich chose Zwingli's theology over Catholicism!. John Calvin (1509-1564) also believed in the superiority of faith over good works, the Bible as the basis of all Christian teachings, and the universal priesthood of believers!. Under the concept of universal priesthood all believers were considered priests!. Calvin wanted the church government to be distinct from the civil government!.
