The colonization of America can be very interesting!. You could do some research on the Quakers, Puritans, etc!. These groups are responsible for settling parts of the Northeastern part of the US!. The only thing that might give you a problem with this is the school's restrictions about church & state!. You see, Quakers and Puritans are actually Christian sects and you will have to put some information into your report about Christianity!. That might not work!.!.!.

I don't know how much you enjoy doing papers on wars but you could do the Civil War!. That should be very interesting because of how the Civil War truly started!. You will learn how the Southern states felt abused by the Northern states due to excessive tariffs, etc!. You can even tell the story of how the Gentleman from South Carolina (Senator) beat the crap out of someone from a northern state (forgot which state, sorry!)!. That is just the beginning!. You could even curb your paper to research one side of the war!. Gordon Cotton is a great writer of the Civil War for the Confederacy!.

Or, the American Revolution!.!.!.Did you know that many of our forefathers were descendants of Hugeonots!? And, that many of the Quakers above wanted to negotiate with the British while the English descendants wanted to blow the British soldiers off the face of the map!?

The war of 1812!. Not too many students do papers on this war!. This is when the White House was set on Fire!. That should be interesting!. You could read stories about how Dolly Madison saved artwork from the White House during the fire!.

Or, you could do a paper on the Louisiana Purchase!.!.!.

You could even do a paper on inventions in the US!. That should be interesting!. For example, Edison invented the Phonograph in 1877!.

Whatever you decide, do something interesting!. Thank goodness for the invention of the internet because your research would have been limited in the old days!.

Good luck and I hope you get an AWww@QuestionHome@Com

Beingsmart has several good ideas!. The only one I might add is the role of trailblazers and moutainmen in the opening up of the continant to settlers!. Daniel Boone in particular makes for an interesting study in how some people have the need to always look over the next hill!. And in doing so help set up the conditions for "civiilization" to follow!. (trading posts to small towns to large cities, roughly!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

The History of The Five Points section in New York City is a fascinating topic!. The Gangs of New York is a great movie to watch for an overall synopsis of this era!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'd add Lewis and Clark to the list!. I believe both of their journals have been published, I've only read Lewis'!. Extremely fascinating from the 1st hand account!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
