They left England, believing the Hanoverian's (Now Windsors) had been corrupted in the religious beliefs!. Their intent was to was to establish themselves in North America, building a new "City on the Hill" (Jerusalem) where they could build on their faith and then return to England and then reestablish Christianity there!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The people above are right!. They left England on their own because the reformation of the churches in england was going to slow for them and they wanted to quicken the pace by doing it themselves in the americas!.

A group called known as the seperatists which i think are a branch off the puritans (but i'm not sure) wanted to completely start over with the church because they didn't agree that every one should be allowed to attend church, they thought only people who were certainly holy should be able to go because they didn't want to go with sinners!.

anyway so the puritans and seperatists came over on the mayflower (about half were seperatists) and it's taught that they accidently went off course and landed outside of the columbia bay area (where they were suppost to stay) and landed at plymouth rock!.

Another view is that the seperatists bribed the navigator to land them outside of where they belongs so they could be in an area of anarchy and develop their own government that went along with their believes!.

They were not banished!. They left England because they did not want to be part of the Anglican church!. They didn't like they way of the religion!. So then they went to the Netherlands to settle there and follow religion their own way, and to escape persecution!. Soon they found that their children were learning the culture and traditions of the Dutch!. The Puritans did not like that!. So they went back to England, not America, to get permission to settle in a colony in Virginia!. They did like to be British, they did like the religion, they did not like the style however!. The Puritans were not at all "inclusive!." It was their way or the highway - and when the English didn't swarm to join their cult, they left England and came here!.
