If the French and Indian Wars had turned out with France as the victor, the United States may well have turned out a French colony!.

Although the Dutch had a significant role in the history of several colonies, especially New York, it's very unlikely that the colonies could ever have fallen, as a group, under Dutch rule!.

As for whether the US would have been better off, it's hard to say!. The US didn't do half-bad as a British colony in the years leading up to the American Revolution!. If King George III had been willing to negotiate with the colonists, who had reached the maturity level where they wanted to have more say in how they were governed, the US might even today be part of the British Commonwealth, much as Canada and Australia are!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My guess is, that if the French had won the French and Indian War, that the colonies might have revolted during the French Revolution and gotten their independence that way!.

I don't think the Dutch would have been able to take over all of the colonies, they were a naval power, not so much a land power!. Although they could hold their own on land, I don't think they could have conquered all of the colonies!. But, if they did, I think we would have revolted when France conquerd the Netherlands in 1795!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm going to say better English than French, because as I understand it, French colonists were one of two classes -- a hand-selected elite and penal transportees!.

I think you would have wound up with a very small ruling elite, and a broad base of lower-class peasants, not allowed to own property and very restricted in their rights!. Similar to what you had in French Guyana!. In other words, not a very pleasant place, and certainly not a beacon of hope and freedom!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Depends on who you ask!. If you ask the Native peoples that populated North America, they would have preferred the French, which had only a few settlements, but many trading posts!.

The Spanish would likely have preferred the French too!.

But I say I prefer the English, but I am biased; since my ancestors are included in the colonists!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
