The disunity of Italy allowed him to do this; Florence and Naples were both small city-states!.

As soon as the rest of Italy heard of Charles' quick conquests, they solved the disunity problem: The remaining states - including the Pope's estates and Milan - united in the League of Venice, which promptly shooed C!. out of Italy!. His conquests lasted less than 5 months!.

(also notable here is that many of the Italian Rennaisance states had small standing armies, relying instead on hired mercenaries!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

~Sadly, it wasn't hard!. In Naples, the Neapolitans were too busy making sauce to notice the troops coming down the road!. In Florence, they were too busy painting their masterpieces to even notice the troops in the city!. And give Charlie credit, he made his troops wear fuzzy slippers so they couldn't be heard until the pounced on the Italians!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
