Depends on what, where and when the "monopoly" is being defined!.

1) Historically!.
a) Silk Route was established by Han Dynasty in 114 BCE and the routes enabled people to transport trade goods, especially luxuries such as silk, satins, musk, rubies, diamonds, pearls and rhubarb from different parts of the world in China, India, and Asia Minor to the Mediterranean, extending over 8,000 km!. Trade on the Silk Road was a significant factor in the development of the great civilizations of China, Egypt, Persia, Arabia, India, Rome, and Byzantium and helped to lay the foundations for the modern world in several respects!. Rome was nearly bankrupted by the imports of silk, and the large draining out of silver, as the technology to make silk was known only in China!.
b) As the most dominant force from 14th to 19th century contributing to 30% of the world's GDP for a period of 500 years!. Even when Marco Polo visited China, he was impressed at the wonders of China!. By Mid-19th century, East India Company found that it could offer nothing to trade with China, and therefore the East India Company forced the Opium Trade!. 8 allied forces (with Japan) fought against China and imposed an unequal treaty upon China!.

2) Culturally
As a nation with 5000 years on unbroken civilisation, using its own common language, and its influence on its neighbouring countries like Japan, Korea and Vietnam in adopting many of the Chinese written characters into their languages, and adopting the many cultural essence of China for 2000 years, we can perceive the manifestation of China's cultural dominance!. The teachings of the Great Sage, Confucius, becomes part of the fabric of many neighbouring countries (around China) and thus, further testified to the profound impact of this nation!.

3) Militarily
Even after the Silk Route was established, Rome recognised the formidable power in the East (referring to China)!. In one incident, a Chinese trade expedition overwhelmed an army of Roman legion!. Though the phalanx was successful in Europe against many armies, the cross-bows adopted by the Chinese tore through the Roman army's close-knit defences!. At its weakest point during the Ming Dynasty, Genghis Khan was able to conquer North China, and went on the rout the whole of Europe!. When the troops returned to conquer China, it took them more than a decades to do so!. Thus, militarily, China had been the most powerful benign forces for 2000 years!.

4) Inventions
The 4 greatest inventions of China, namely, paper, printing, gunpowder, compass had profound impact on mankind!. With both paper and printing available, Europe, from 1000 CE onwards was able to proliferate knowledge and books became much more available to the masses!. Literacy rates in Europe climbed steadily!. Thus Renaissance soon began!. Availability of compass enabled explorers like Ferdinand, Columbus to explore "New Worlds" or even to travel to East Indies for spices!. And gunpowder was further developed and use in firearms!. These 4 basics speeded up the process of mankind towards progress!. Thus, arguably, the monopolisation of the basic ingredients towards "enlightenment" and knowledge should be credited to China!.

5) Modern phenomenon
As China opens up, the phenomenal rate at which its industrialisation impact on the world can be manifested through the fact that it is currently "the world's factory"!. Anything that China buys (for example petroleum, stainless steel, materials, etc), its impact on global prices has been mammoth!. Anything that China sells, global prices take a dramatic free-fall!. Such phenomenon can only be alluded to its monopolisation of markets by virtue of its huge internal markets!.

6) Future trends
Because of its huge internal market, its influence on many key areas: technology, innovation, fashion, entertainment will be felt in the coming decades!. Many will strive to tap upon the available markets, and the added incentive is that it is a market without border, within China itself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
