First, your should keep mind that while it is commonly referred to as a civil war, technically it was no such thing!. The Confederacy had no desire to take over the general government of the Union, rather, it only wanted to use its individual States’ positions of being free, independent and sovereign to establish a new country!. One that they believed to be more along the lines of the Founders!. (You can refer to the 1783 Treaty of Peace Article One)!.

That said!. !. !. !. !.

The primary consequence of this American War of the 1860s was that the North through force of arms invaded the Confederacy and beat it into submission (with war against civilians as well as military) and forced those States back into the Union!. For this you can refer to the case of Texas v!. White [1869]!.

Secondly, it changed forever the application of the Constitution of the United States for all States North as well as South!. This is fundamentally demonstrated with the applying of the 14th Amendment (which never met Constitutional requirements for ratification and again refer to Texas v!. White) which provided the vehicle for the federal government to apply the first eight amendments to all of the States in addition to the federal government!. The Founders only intended those first eight articles of the Bill of Rights to be used as exclusionary acts on the Federal government as part of the Constitution’s function of protecting both the States as well as the people!.

Thirdly, it brought slavery in North America to an end!.

In others, the country prior to the American War of the 1860s is a different country than the one following that war!. This is why the pre war practice of referring to the country as, “these United States” changed in the post war period to one of “the United States!.”
