The oil "crisis" of the mid 1970s was contrived, born out of politics!. President Jimmy Carter espoused the idea of peace in the Middle East!. He began by befriending Began in Israel!. This upset the Muslims who neighbor Israel, who by chance are also the key players in OPEC!. Carter then called Sadat of Egypt and Began to Camp David and basically brow beat them both into submission and got them to agree to a lasting peace agreement!. Again, none of this set well with the other Muslim countries of the region and in response, they simply instituted an embargo against the U!.S!.!. And, just like those who espouse Global Warming now (the belief by the leading scientists then was that we were headed for another ice age), a number of leading scientists then began telling the people that the world was running out of oil and that at the current rate of consumption the world would simply run out and dry up within the next 15 to 20 years!. Obviously, they were wrong!. But still, we really should strive to become less dependent on (foreign) oil!. When our usage rate surpasses the earth's ability to produce it really will become a matter of life and death!. Let's not wait another 30+ years to get serious about exploring other options!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
