Question: Question about WWII!?
Was Hitler just using Japan to take control over the pacific easier when he had finished with europe!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
No!. The 'Axis' agreement meant each of the three main Axis powers have their own sphere of influence - Japan gets the Pacific, Germany EUrope (including Russia), Italy gets the Mediterranean areas!.

I really doubt Kevin's answer above, about the Germans asking Japan to attack Russia from the east!. How useful would this have been to the Germans!? If Russia was locked in a life-and-death struggle in the West, how likely would it have been that the Russians would send troops all the way across Siberia, to the Pacific!?!.!.!.More likely, Japan would have thought Russian areas on the Pacific would be easy pickings while the Germans harassed them in the west, but Japan never bothered to take advantage of this!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

What Hitler was hoping for out of his Japanese alliance was that Japan would attack Russia in the east when he attacked them in the west!. This would have been a repeat of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5, which was Japan's "coming out" party as a modern industrialized nation!. It had only been fifty years since Commodore Perry "opened" Japan to trade with the rest of the world in 1854, and at that time they were a feudal, medieval people!. Now they had a steam-powered steel armored Navy (which sank both Russian Fleets) and quick firing cannon, just like the Europeans!. It was a huge shock that Japan was able to beat one of the Great Powers!. Theodore Roosevelt won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1908 for mediating the Peace Treaty bringing the war to an end!. Hitler was hoping the Japanese would take the opportunity to administer another drubbing to the Russians, and help themselves to Russia's Asian holdings, while he dismembered them in the west!. He had some basis for this hope, because the Japanese and Russians had fought an undeclared war on the Russian-Manchurian border early in WWII, when the conquering Japanese were too careless of the Russian border!. Both sides quickly got enough of this and broke off the hostilities!.

But the Japanese did not oblige!. When Hitler turned on his partner, Stalin, and attacked Russia in June 1941, Japan did nothing!. Russian intelligence agents in Tokyo eventually were able to get word to Stalin that the Japanese had no intention of entering the war and attacking Russia in the east!. This was crucial, because it allowed Stalin to move massive forces from the east, where they had been watching for a Japanese attack, and mount a successful counter-attack against the exhausted Germans, who had reached the suburbs of Moscow as the brutal Russian winter was closing in!.

Japan never informed Hitler of the plan to attack Pearl Harbor and provoke a war with the US!. Hitler was as surprised as anybody!. The terms of the German-Japanese alliance would not have required Germany to go to war with the US under these conditions - Germany would have been obligated to fight Japan's enemies only if they attacked Japan!. On December 8, 1941, Franklin Roosevelt sought only a Declaration of War against Japan!. Nevertheless, Hitler declared war on the US on December 11!. Maybe he was still hoping for some help with Russia!.

Japan and Russia were not at war throughout all of WWII, until the very end!. Roosevelt at Yalta had obtained a Russian promise that Russia would enter the war against Japan within ninety days of the conclusion of the war with Germany!. As it worked out, ninety days was the day after the first A-Bomb at Hiroshima!. Russia enthusiastically entered the war against the dying empire of conquest, hoping to snap up some easy territorial gains!. About all they obtained was Sakhalin Island, though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Obviously there was a certain amount of sharing of information between senior generals and admirals on both the Japanese and German sides but in essence the Japanese and Germans fought separate but parallel wars without any significant contribution to or even much direct contact with each other!.
He never even met Hirohito or any of the senior Japanese leadership!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
