My grandparents were married in the late 1940's and early 1950's!. They are both middle class families!.

On both sides, my Grandma's rings are definately less than !.25ct, but are set high to look larger than they are!. Both have smaller diamond "chips" on each side of the larger diamond to accent the shoulders of the ring!. The wedding bands are fine and thin, with a small amount of decorative ornamentation cut or moulded into them!. They are both white AND yellow gold!.

One of my Grandfather's has as wedding band!. The other didn't, but he was later given a large catsite ring when my Grandmother was able to purchase one with money that she earned herself, which he wore on his "wedding" finger!.

Many of my friends and coworkers have their parents' and grandparent's weddding jewellery, and they were also married during this time!. There is little variation between their jewellery and my Grandmothers'!.

Bear in mind that after the war many jewellery stores sold out of wedding jewellery as there was a sharp increase in marriages when the men returned from overseas!.

In my experience shopping for and researching antique and vintage jewellery, many engagement ringsfrom this period are much like my Grandmothers' as well!. I also come across many rings that have a sapphire or other precious gem as the main stone!. Diamonds did not become commonplace as engagement jewellery until the 1940's, when Debeer's launched their marketing campaign, "A diamond is forever"!. The traditional anniversary gifts list shows diamonds as a gift for the 60th anniversary!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Most men did not wear wedding bands until the '50's!.
As is now - a man's band was larger, wider, or often, he would use a class or family ring as a wedding ring!. Most people couldn't afford them!. Many (most) women didn''t have one, or it would be of steel or silver - rarely gold!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
