Robert E!. Howard (Conan the Barbarian; King Kull; Solomon Kane) born 1/22/1906 died 6/11/1936 only had a High School education and single-handedly created the "Sword & Sorcery" genre!.

S!. E!. Hinton wrote "The Outsiders" while still in school (published on graduation)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Samuel Clemens, AKA Mark Twain!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I want to say Edgar Allan Poe, but I could be wrong!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Mark Twain was 11 when his father died and he became a printer's apprentice and educated himself in public libraries in the evenings!.

Edgar Allan Poe studied languages at the University of Virginia in February 1826 for ONE year!. That has the extent of his college level training!. (His grammar schooling was in Scotland and secondary schooling in England)

Benjamin Franklin wrote TONS of stuff!. He went to school for TWO years TOTAL!. He attended Boston Latin School but did not graduate!. He continued his education through voracious reading!.

Thomas Paine had no formal education whatsoever!.

Harriet Beecher Stowe, being a female had no formal educational training but became a teacher and wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, a huge catalyst in the Civil War!.

Washington Irving was a lousy & disinterested student as a child and spent more time sneaking out of class to attend plays, never persueing anything more than the basics!.

Frank Baum of the Wizard of Oz was a sickly child and spent only 2 years in school at the age of 11!. That was the only formal education he had!.

Patrick Henry attended local schools for a few years as a young child, and then was tutored by his father at home!.

Walt Whitman concluded formal schooling at age 11!.

Edna St!. Vincent Millay went as far as high school and was first published at age 15!.

Jack London was essentially self-educated!. He taught himself in the public library, mainly just by reading books!. No formal training whatsoever!.

Okay, that's enough!. I'm tired!. Only a minor few of the early writers in American history were formally educated, especially women!.!.!.!.well past the Ameircan Civil War!. Remember, President Lincoln wasn't schooled at all!. Not uncommon!. Anything more than a few years of grammar school was the norm!.!.!.!.college educations, like Thomas Jefferson's were the rarity, even in wealthier families like Frank Baum's!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
