Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Marc Bloch and Jaques LeGoff, but if you want a more marxian point of view may be Rodney Hilton (Born in 1916, died in 2002) Catherine Hall, or Perry Anderson in "Passages from Antiquity to Feudalism (1974)" (very discussed)

For those not knowing Liverani and De Ste Croix:
G!.E!.M de S!.te Croix was a British historian born in 1910 in Macau and dead in 2000 in Oxford!. Following a Marxian epistemological approach (or, as you say, a marxist serious scholar) he had a llifelong debate with Moses Finley
He is more famous for ancient Greek history ("The Origins of Peloponnesian War " "The Class Struggle in Ancient Greek World")

Mario Liverani is alive and kicking!. Is a professor of Midlle East History at La Sapienza University in Rome (He was born in Rome in 1939)!. He is one of the top Mesopotamian historian, fine expert of Hittites and Sumerians!.
