The first computer was called the ABC computer, started in 1937 and successfully run in 1942!. It could not be "programmed" and only solved equations!. John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry invented it!.
Atanasoff was 39 when it was done!. Berry was a college grad student!.
It was built at Iowa State College


A Computer called the ENIAC is thought to be the first computer in the "modern" sense"!.
ENIAC was conceived and designed by John Mauchly and J!. Presper Eckert of the University of Pennsylvania!.

There were many mechanical devices with gears and stuff in them that were invented as early as the 1600s!. But the first electronic, digital computers were invented during WWII!.

They were invented simultaneously in England and the US!. And both countries developed them for different reasons!. England wanted a machine to break German codes!. The US wanted computers to develop tables for big guns!. On battleships they had tables of numbers to aim the big guns, how much powder, angles and so on, to hit a target!. There were rooms full of people who did all the math for these tables using adding machines!. These people were called 'computers', so that's what they called the machine, and why we call it that today!.

There was no one person who invented the computer, in both cases they were teams of mathematicians and electronics experts hired by the governments of either country!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Charles Babbage (1792-1871)!. Built what he called his Difference Engine, then designed a fully programmable computer - the Analytical Engine!. He never saw it built, though a part of it was built to his design about ten years ago, and it worked perfectly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
