Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
He sold it, in the opinion of some historians, as his army in the Caribbean had suffered catastrophic losses through disease, mainly yellow fever!. He did not have the manpower to continue to defend Louisiana!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Primarily Napoleon was hurting for funds to continue his war!. With mounting losses in Hispaniola!. Napoleon gradually realized that Hispaniola must be abandoned!. Without that island he had little use for Louisiana!. Facing renewed war with Great Britain, he could not spare troops to defend that territory; he needed funds, moreover, to support his military ventures in Europe!. Accordingly, in April 1803 he offered to sell Louisiana to the United States!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, he sold it because he needed the money, and couldn't defend an overseas empire with the English's naval supremacy (esp after his failed invasion of Egypt)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Should have been even less, but the price also included some debts US owed to France for revolutionary war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
