Joshua Chamberlain - college professor during the Civil War; asked for a leave of absence to serve with the North and was refused; asked for a sabbatical to study in Europe and was granted - served in the 20th Maine for the Federal army; saved Meade's behind at the Battle of Gettysburg on Little Round Top!. After the war, went back to teaching, became the governor, etc!. The best part is all of the beautiful writing he did before, during, and after the war - he was, after all, a rhetoric teacher!. My favorite historical figure is Joseph Stalin!. His life story is inspirational!. He rose from childhood poverty to become a powerful leader and made the Soviet Union into a world power!.

FDR, Winston Churchill and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin!.

My grandfathers both worked for FDR in WWII!.
