That was Lincoln's successful propaganda effort to have Euros stay out of the conflict!. What it really was was a war of secession, such as the ones Bangledesh and Sri Lanka fought against India!. Lincoln was desperate to have the Euros stay out of the conflict, so he had Seward paint a picture of "a civil war over slavery!." The fact that you (and everyone else) call it the Civil War attests to Lincoln's success!.Www@QuestionHome@Com The American Civil War is a misnomer!. A civil war is when 2 or more groups fight for control of everyone!. The most accurate term is war between the states!. The South did not want to take over the North!. The South seceded, meaning it didn't want to be part of the union!. Unfortunately for them, the Confederate States had violated the Constitution by forming foreign alliances!. President Lincoln, however, still needed a cause celebre to justify so much bloodshed and he chose slavery!. It will be argued for the rest of time whether or not the outcome was worth the blood!. This is what irritates me & others so much when people start talking about reparations for the descendants of slaves!. Wasn't the blood of over 300,000 Union soldiers enough!? The value of their sacrifice is unquantifiable and therefore sufficient!.Www@QuestionHome@Com The south wanted to become it's own country and succeed from the union!. The Union did not want this so they banned slavery (which was huge for the economy of the south) in order to cripple them so that they could not form their own country!. The south fought with the north (union states) in an effort to become their own nation!. The south lost hence we have the United States of America, which includes the former confederate states!.
