For a long time, England paid very little attention to the colonies!. It was called Salutary Neglect, I think, and it was the period of time where England failed to strictly enforce parliamentary laws to keep the colonies loyal to Great Britain!. Thus, the colonies were left to themselves, forming their own governments and ways of life!. Britain ended this in 1763 (after almost 200 years), and completely took away those freedoms and tried to control the colonies again!. This created tensions, and yes there were protests against laws and policies (as well as blatant refusal to follow the new laws), but there was also the Boston Tea Party, the Boston Massacre, and revolts became more violent as time went by (Battle of Lexington)!. England tried to suppress them even more by enforcing the navigation acts that forced the colonies to trade with Britain and only Britain, and everything eventually built up to the Revolution!. The writing of the Constitution itself was seen as an act of rebellion and high treason!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Protests and assorted non to semi-violent actions!. Often times colonials would simply ignore laws!. The Stamp Act, for instance, resulted in many "verbal" agreements between people so contracts would not have to created!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
