The federal government had no power to tax!. The states had too much power!. The Constitution provided a stronger central government wich ultimatley made the government more powerful!. Creating the three branches of government (judicial- Supreme Court; executive- presidrent; legislative- congress) allowed for a balance of power so that no one branch would become too powerful (like King George had been to the colonies)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com The main difference between the Articles of Confederation (AoC) and the Constitution is that AoC governed the initial period after the former 13 colonies gained independence from Britain!. In that initial period, the newly independent states had formed a confederation, which means that each state retained its sovereignty, but joined in a limited alliance with the other 12 states on certain matters, especially their common defense!. A contemporary example of a confederation is the European Union!. But all that changed at the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, when the 13 states gathered & decided to unite into a single sovereign federation!. In contrast to a confederation, the constituent geographical states of a federation, although they have certain powers, are not sovereign entities!.
