In my research I have found there to be two generally accepted meanings and origins of this name!.

Number 1 : An Old French respelling of the Old Provencal name Alienor!. Sometimes considered a derivative of Helen!.

Introduced to England in the 12th century by Eleanor of Aquitaine, who came from France to wed King Henry II!.

Number 2 : It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "shining light" or "light" and is a variant of Helen!.

History: Eleanor of Aquitaine (12th century) was heiress to a large portion of France, wife of two kings and mother of two more (Richard the Lionhearted and John)!. Her powerful personality, intelligence, and inexhaustible energy made her unique in her time!.

Comparison of the two :

There are two origins and meanings, though curiously most sources agree that it is sometimes considered to be a variant of Helen and was brought to England by Eleanor of Aquitaine who was French!.

She was named Aenor after her mother Aenor de Chatellerault, and was called by the Provencal phrase alia Aenor "the other Aenor" in order to distinguish her from her mother!.Thus she was the first known bearer of the name!.

After researching on several websites I found the evidence more compelling that the name's origin is French!.
