His use of words is brilliant and his uncanny ability to involve you in the emotion!. Read Romeo and Juliette or Macbeth!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

It may seem like his plays are tame and rather boring by today's standards!. However, he is very much a genius in the same way that Albert Einstein was a genius!. For example, many physicists today know more about special relativity than Einstein ever did!. He is special for one reason alone, and a really important one at that, he thought of it first!. He conducted the thought experiments of what it would be like to travel at the speed of light, changed the face of physics etc!.!.!. If we applied this same reasoning Shakespeare!. We can appreciate just how amazing he was!. Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear and so on!. Taken in context these are brilliant plays that were revolutionary at the time and altered the future of storytelling permanently!. Sure, after him there may have been better playwrights and better writers!. But Shakespeare laid the groundwork for the modern drama and the modern comedy!. He changed the face of theater!. Before him theater was a bitter wasteland of boring and obvious religious allegory!. Shakespeare and some other contemporaries elevated theater beyond the trappings of religion, even beyond it's origins in Greek theater and revolutionized the way stories were told!. Look at many movies, books, tv shows, Shakespeare's influence is in all of them!.

He's considered so special because he was a really good writer and was really popular in his day!. His popularity has lasted for 400 years so far!. His stories had really interesting, cool, funny, and clever plots and were written in an extremely flavorful style that really used the language to its fullest!. He had all sorts of interesting metaphors and poetic stuff going on in his writing!. It's all poetic and interesting!. I guess you could call him a master wordsmith!. Not only were his works really good, but he also wrote so many of them!. Having so many great works shows that he truly was a great writer and not just someone who maybe got lucky and wrote one great masterpiece!. Plus, since there so much of his work, it gives literary scholars a lot of study!. So he keeps people interested!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He is special and popular cause look at his plays! Any of them would work great in today's society even!. That's the true testament of an artist, is when the art goes beyond the time it was written!. Romeo and Juliet will always be an everlasting story (we all know those teens who's families hate each other), Othello (Jealously is a common feeling that will never go away), Macbeth (Power and corruption) etc!. Plus he added words to the English language AND look at some of the great lines of his:

I agree with the answers of everyone else as to why Shakespeare WAS special!. But, as a side note, I want to tip my hat to you for questioning it!. I don't like this pervasive notion that is endorsed by the academic world (particularly in high school) that if it's a classic everyone is supposed to just automatically like it!. You hear teachers say things like "oh it's such wonderful work" and I don't think they mean it half the time!. I'm not saying that there aren't classics, because there are, but what I AM saying is that we, as individuals, have the right to interpret literature as what it is ourselves and make our own judgments!. I liked Catcher in the Rye, loved Pride and Prejudice, and hated the Scarlet Letter!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He wrote plays that were entertaining at the time to both royalty and the peasants!. Using both detailed plots and vulgar humour to keep everybody entertained!. The man was a genious as said above he introduced over 2000 words into the English language and many phrases we use today were introduced by his plays!.
