At the time of the First and Second Anglo-Boer War, modern South Africa was divided into four colonies; The Cape and Natal which were under British control, and the Transvaal and Orange Free State which were under Boer control (decendents from Dutch settlers)!. The causes of the wars have been open to much debate; some historians argue for a straight forward imperial motivation, stating that the British wanted to control as much colonial territory as possible!. Others state that the Boers were close to the Germans and did not want to risk them gaining a foothold in the Southern Africa!. The most popular theory is that the discovery of gold in South Africa provided the economic impetus for the British invasion of the Boer colonies!. Despite the war, South Africa became a semi-independent colony under a united colonial government in 1910 with a Boer Prime Minister under a British Governer-General!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Boers (Dutch for farmers) were mostly Dutch but also French Huguenot settlers who came to S!. Africa in the 17th-19th centuries!. They mostly settled inland and pursued agriculture!. They tended to be very strict Calvinists!. During the same time they were settling, moving north from the ports in the south, the Zulus were moving south and there was a good deal of conflict!. Mostly in the long run, the Boers won!.
The Cape of Good Hope, and particularly Cape Town, were of interest to traders and sailors, and were more or less dominated by the British!. The problem arose with the discovery of diamonds and gold in the Transvaal, which led to a great influx of British people into the Boer republics!. There was a good deal of friction, resulting in the Boer War!. The British won after a hard-fought war, and the entire area became pretty much a British colony until WWII!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
