NATO is the only standing military alliance the USA is a member of right now!. They're also part of the OAS (Organization of American States), which is nowadays much more about promoting international cooperation, democracy and free trade, but which does include amongst its founding principles the idea of collective security--that is, preventing aggression amongst each other and coming to the aid of any member that faces aggression from an outside source!. There's also ANZUS, a defensive alliance between the USA, Australia and New Zealand!.

Russia is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), an association of about half a dozen former members of the Soviet Union organized on the same principles of non-aggression and collective security!.

During the Cold War, Western Europe, the USA and Canada were organized into NATO, and they were opposed by the Warsaw Pact, an alliance of East European Communist states led by the Soviet Union (Russia)!. There was also SEATO, an Asian/Pacific equivalent to NATO that included Britain, France, the USA, Australia and several Asian countries!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In general, everyone in the the Americas (well, except Venezuela) and Western Europe is America's ally!. America also has close relations with both Israel and the Arab oil states at the same time!. Russia has China and some Eastern European countries like Serbia on its side, not to mention all those post-Soviet 'stans like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and so on!. Russia is not part of NATO but does participate in the organization's Partnership for Peace initiative!. At present Russia is essentially a free agent as far as multilateral alliances go: its one major defense commitment, the Collective Security Treaty which brings together several former Soviet states, is ineffective as to be meaningless because each participant has its own agenda!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
