The three answerers above me have it right!. However, I'll add that the Republican side also lost because they started 'cleaning' their own side while they were still fighting the Nationalists!. Never, never a wise move!.
Orwell himself, in spite of having been wounded, risked being arrested and was able to be expatriated by sheer chance!. Many people that were fighting with him were executed by their own side, because they were anarchist rather than communists or not the right flavour or communists!.!.!.

Spain had elected a Republican, socialist government!. The royalist, catholic, militaristic Nationalists did not like this!. They invaded from Morocco, with the connivance of Fascist Italy and Germany and with deliberate ignoring by the English!. I think it started in 1936 and ended just before the outbreak of WWI in 39!. I don't know a lot about it but one of the interesting things about it was the number of artistic types, communists etc who went there to fight against the facist General Franco!. The most famous was probably George Orwell who wrote a novel about it!. However, they lost!! I think Franco was dictator in spain for a long, long time afterwords!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
