British Pounds Sterling has been used since 1860's
The Bank of England was formed in 1694, followed by the Bank of Scotland a year later!. Both began to issue paper money, with the issues of the Bank of England gaining greater importance after 1707[citation needed]!. During the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, Bank of England notes were legal tender and their value floated relative to gold!. The Bank also issued silver tokens to alleviate the shortage of silver coins!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't know what the dates are but at some point we went from precious metal backed money (insured By = amounts of gold or silver)

to federal reserve notes (they can print what they think in right for there specific agenda)
