Spain was officially neutral, though on very cozy terms with Germany!. Franco allowed volunteers to join the German Army, and over 18,000 did so!. The carrying of the Spanish flag was an official no-no, and they didn't wear the Spanish uniform, at least not exactly, though the division is named for the color of the Falangist uniform shirt!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Spain was not part of the Axis powers!. While Franco was sympathetic to Hitler and Musolinni, and they to him, Spain stayed officially neutral during the Second World War!. Adding to this confusion is the fact that Hitler supplied Franco with weapons, advisors and a airforce (the Kondor Legion) during the Spanish Civil War!.

The Spanish Blue Division was a division made up of Spanish fascist (anti-communist) volunteers who served the German Army on the Eastern Front!. It's in some ways very similar to the Abraham Lincoln Brigade of American Volunteers who served against Franco's forces in the Spanish Civil War!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is not true that there were American and British 'Divisions' fighting for the Germans! The 'British Free Corps' was a tiny SS unit!. During the whole of the war only 55 people entered it - and a number of these were prisoners of war who had committed crimes, and were given the choice of joining or being executed!. At no time were there ever 30 people in the unit!. They were due to go to war if they reached a total of 30, but because they never had this many men, they never did!.

Spain was neutral during the Second World War!. It is believed that Franco offered Germany support early on, but this was declined, as Spain was destitute and would have been a drain on German resources!. During the famine in Southern Spain which occurred in the early 1940's, the authorities had to issue license permits to gather and sell grass from the fields to starving people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
