Question: Was Columbus Really The First European To Explore America!?
Accordind to an ancient British legend, a Welsh prince named Madoc reportedly set foot on a land far west of Ireland!. It is presumed that if this were true, this event would have taken place in 1170!. Interestingly, I have also found accounts of British settlers coming into contact with Welsh speaking red indians from 1660-1750 in Virginia, Georgia and modern-day Kentucky!

The legend of the Welshmen have never been historically proven!. However there are strong reasons to believe the first European to explore the American continent was Leiv Eiriksson!. According to Icelandic legends he landed in Vinland, which is today called Newfoundland!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There were supposedly accounts (a man named David Ingram made a living in the 17th C!.telling the fictitious story of his travels in America) of these Welsh-speaking Indians, but no conclusive evidence was ever found!. While some people claimed to have met these tribes, no other Indian tribes heard of them or knew anything about them, and one of Lewis and Clark's missions was to try and find this mysterious tribe (which, of course, they never did)!.

Leif Eirikson, however, did visit North America and establish an Icelandic Viking colony in what is now Newfoundland, around the 10th century!. There is ample archeological evidence of his visit on that island, and some artifacts that appear to be of Viking origin have been found as far west as Minnesota, suggesting that either the Icelanders living in Newfoundland travelled far, or else their goods were highly-prized as items for trade!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is little reason to believe that 'America' was unfamiliar to the old civilizations of the world!. Apparently the inroads made were insignificant, however, and no permanent colonies were formed, whether by Egyptians, Chinese, Irish, Moors, etc!.

Columbus is not the first, but his voyages marked the beginnings of European colonization and pillaging of the American continents, and is therefore of more interest, today, than some fleeting clue that someone else was there first!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

about 167 years before Madoc might have landed in North America, it's pretty certain that Lief Eriksson did so!. The exact location of the "Vinland" landing is still open for debate, but there is a consensus among archaeologists that vikings did reach the shores of Canada roughly five centuries prior to Columbus sailing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is always possible!. Columbus never did explore the Americas though!. He never got to the mainland!.

Miss Marie!. Vespucci was not before Columbus he was after him but he actually lande on the mainland and was the first to realsie that it wasn't India as Columbus had believed!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

the vikings around the year 1000 sailed to greenland and then to northern canada!. they made their way all the way down to minnesota and turned back!. thats where the minnesota vikings got their name!. columbus got too much credit for a whole lot of nothing!. he sailed to cuba!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Techninally no!. Leif Ericson, a Viking, landed on the Coast of North America in the late Tenth Century!. The Vikings actually settled there for a short time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Obviously the Vikings were the first to discover the new world!. The misconception that Columbus was the first is retold through school in a "fairytale" sort of way!. Google is your friendWww@QuestionHome@Com
