In the beginning the Revolution had a strange cast of bedfellows: aristocrats, clergy, and professionals, but not peasants!. The original aim of the Revolution was to create a constitutional monarchy!. Most of the country wanted this as well, so this stage was relatively easy!.
The National Assembly that followed was heavily influenced by Parisians, who got some radical members elected: Marat, whose hatred of the aristocracy dripped from every publication, and Robespierre, a lawyer who wanted to guide the revolution!. Then there was the communist Bebeuf ( yes, communism is older than Karl Marx)!. Years of chronically bad harvests led to serious grain shortages, which inspired riots everywhere!. The motto of these people might have been, "We don't care about your charity!. What we want is power!."
When the royal family tried to flee but were caught, documents which were found showed that the King was intent upon raising a foreign army to retake his throne!.
For the radicals this was high treason, and thus Louis and Marie were beheaded!.
Now the Assembly was quite radical!. Robespierre began demanding the deaths of all counter-revolutionaries, as did Marat!. Hence the Reign of Terror!. It was during this period that the estates of the nobles were seized and then broken up and sold to provide funding for the new government!.
Even nobles who had supported the revolution were beheaded!. The Catholic Church was stripped of all rights!. Priests became employees of the state, although some continued to serve the populace without getting paid!. In the Vendee the peasants were devout Catholics and fought a war with the troops of the new government!. Thus Paris found itself at war with some of the provinces!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
