In January 1943 the Allied and Japanese forces on facing each other on New Guinea were like two battered heavyweights!. Round one had went to the Americans and Australians who had ejected the Japanese from Papua, New Guinea!. After three months of unimaginative frontal attacks had overcome a well entrenched foe, General Douglas MacArthur, the Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA) Commander, had his airstrip and staging base at Buna on the North coast!. It was expensive real estate!. About 13,000 Japanese troops perished during the terrible fighting, but Allied casualities where also heavy, 8,500 men fell in battle (5,698 of them Austrailians) 27,000 cases of Malaria were reported, mainly due to lack of medical supplies!. Besides ruining the Austrailian 7th and U!.S 32d infantry divisions, the campagin had severely taxed the Austrailian 5th and U!.S 41st Infantry divisions!. The exhausted Americans needed six months to reconstitute before their next operation!. Austrailian ground forces, despite heavier loses, became the front line of defense against the Japanese who, though bloodied, were ready for round two!.

also the U!.S 2nd Engineer Special Brigade and the 162nd infantry fought aswell!. The 31st, 33rd and 43rd infantry divisions also fought later in the campagin!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
