I could blather on but seriously this article speaks quite well so I would peruse it-- see below - - - that said the chief success and chief failure were one & the same!. Maryland was founded as a place where those professing a belief in Jesus Christ were accepted no matter if they were Protestant or Catholic - - - later though when the rule of the colony fell into dispute this Act of Toleration became the reason for internal war & strife and natrurally Jews & other non believers in Christ were not tolerated, still an Act of Toleration opens the door to Toleration a nudge if not completely and in that instance was a success!. also Maryland was successful due to its central location, the richness of its lands and its wondrous waterways which lent a bounty of seafood to the diet!.

link and mere snippet - - - go read article despite spelling errors it is quite accurate

""__----------On the accession of William and Mary to the throne of England in 1689, the tranquility of Maryland was again interrupted!. A rumor was fabricated, and industriously circulated, that the Catholics had combined with the Indians to cut off the Protestants of the colony!. This roused the Catholics in their own defense, and to the assertion of the rights of the king and queen!. The Protestants attempted to subdue the Catholics by force, and were compelled to relinquish the government into the hands of the former!.""
