Rome would have been destroyed!.

I think your talking about H's decision not to pursue his victory in the battle of Carrhae!. The Roman people were thoroughly demoralized at the time by the losses at Carrhae (80,000 troops; unmatched till the 20th century), so much so that - as Livy notes - Consul Fabian had to order a maximum of 3 days mourning for each soldier, and women were barred from the forum!.!.!.in case they caused excessive demoralization of the people!.

That's how bad the Roman's took the loss at Carrhae!. If hit by a second blow, such as the invasion of the city, Roman power would have been smashed, and her allies would take this as the signal to desert her!.!.!.!.In other words, Rome would have been left with the Latium region at best, and Italy would be split up into several kingdoms!.

Carthage would then, once again, be the dominant power in the western Mediterranean!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The destruction of Carthage was the result of agitation by a certain section of Roman politics!. While Carthage faithfully obeyed the conditions laid on it by Rome after the Second Punic War, it's trade based economy recovered and flourished!. Some Romans feared that Carthage was becoming too strong again and one day would inevitably challenge Roman power!. The ringleader was Marcus Cato, who continually warned of the threat Carthage could pose, and adopted a habit of ending every speech in the Senate with the words 'delenda est Carthago' (Carthage must be destroyed)!.

Cato's views gradually won support and a clash between Carthage and Numidians allied to Rome provided a pretext!. In the Third Punic War Carthage was besieged by Scipio Aemilianus, captured and completely obliterated!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sorry Naz, that Canea!. Not Carrhae!. That one is a few hundred years later!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
