Question: How did they create Sepia toning in the past
I,ve been looking at some old photos of relatives from way back!. Great grandperents and beyond, as I have been constructing a family history!. Of course most of the really old photos were sepia, not black and white!.

Why did they use that tone then, and how was it created!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is a chemical bath used like the ones during the photo developing process!. You mixed up the toner and put the photo in the tray & it changes, you take it out when you see the tone you want!. !. Some times you could leave part black & white by masking the already developed photo with a latex resist!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sepia toning wasn't really created, it was simply the only option available at the time!. I believe, though I can't be sure, that photographs were processed using a silver and chalk mixture originally!. The mixture darkened when exposed to light!. An improvement to this process used iodine vapor, mercury fumes, and finally a salt bath!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That was due to the type of film and the lighting available then and the long exposure times that were needed!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
