Question: What the main difference between USA & UK culture!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Vocabulary, government, and morals!.
Obviously, Americans and Brits speak differently than one another!. Chips are to Americans what Crisps are to Brits, and Chips are to Brits what Fries are to Americans (for example)!.

Americans also believe they are whatever their heritage is-"I am 25% Slovak, 4% German, 10% Manx, 2% Greek" etc etc!. Where as brits are brits if they were reared in britain, no matter what their ancestry is!.

American currency is different!. Food is different (everything is in such big portions!)!. Americans drive on the right side of the road, on the left side of the car (not the left side of the road on the right side of the car)!.

British government-constitutional monarchy
US government-democracy

Britain - Free Schools, Free Medical Care!. You can drink and gamble when you're 18!. Tea is big!. 10% tip to servers!. Dinner comes around 7-9pm!.
USA - Pay for School, Pay For Health Insurance!. Drink and gamble when you're 21!. Coffee is big!. A "throw-away" society (everything seems to come in a 'disposable' form)!. 15% tip to servers!. Dinner comes around 4-6pm!.

There are a ton more!. Those are just a few that I know of!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Like the USSR (now just Russia) and China, the USA is a continental mega-state!. These countries tend, because they have diversity and conflict within their own borders, to be introverted and isolationist!. Americans give the impression of not truly believing in foreigners!. This was reinforced by the 19thC pattern of expansion within N!. America; there was a strong and developing market there which encouraged American industries to concentrate on internal sales and largely ignore the needs of the rest of the world!. The same is true of American politics!. For many years (though less so recently) the important issues were exclusively internal, and this has shaped the American character!. You have only to read the blinkered questions and answers on this site to get the feel of it - a provincial, narrow-minded concentration on what goes on at home!.

The UK (though not notably more virtuous) is outward looking and internationally-minded, despite recent attempts to lock us into a large continental bloc!. This is because, as a tiny country, we have always had to interact with foreigners and take them seriously, whether trading or fighting with them!. We also had an empire, which reinforced this trend!. Another compelling reason for us to take people of the outside world seriously on their own terms was commercial!. They were our customers!. Unlike the USA we had a small internal market, easily saturated, and so had to export to survive!. The customer is king: when you are trying to sell something, you certainly study, very carefully, the buyer's character and preferences!.

If we mean by 'culture' something narrower - the culture of music, books and art - then there will be less difference!. The USA inherited (and has subsequently contributed to) the culture of all the peoples who make up the nation, and this is largely international!. Mozart is Mozart, Bernstein is Bernstein whether played by Japanese, Americans or Eskimos!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The culture of UK is very ancient, while much of the culture of the USA is comparatively new and much of it is not even Anglo-Saxon or British in origin either!.

Here are some samples of British culture!.

St!. George's Day Covent Garden [English culture]

The Padstow Obby Oss - May Day 2008
http://www!.youtube!.com/watch!?v=v_EJTCftT!.!.!.

The above event is pre-Christian and British Pagan!. The people of Padstow and Cornwall are Celts like the Welsh and the Bretons - directly related to the Irish, the Max and the Scots etc!.

WALES - Before the massed ranks of the Welsh Gorsedd and in the presence of the Arch Druid of the Island of Breten - the Gorsedd Prayer [sung in Welsh with English subs] preceded by the Bardic Heralds [trumpeters]!.

The Americans I have met seem to put more value on material things than us Brits!.

We also pronounce things differently!.

However, I am British and have a lot of American friends and deep down we don't differ that much!. we all care about our kids and families, most of us work hard to pay the bills and most of us care about our fellow human beings!.

The biggest difference is in governments!. The US presidents all seem to want to start wars whilst the British Prime ministers won't start them but can't wait to join in!. Neither seem to care about how many troops are getting killed!.

One huge difference though is that whilst the USA spends loads on its military, the UK doesn't give a flying ffffffff about ours!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The US kids seem to grow up alot quicker!.!. unless thats just me!.
UK has more traditions, like roast dinner on a sunday and church etc!.
Our houses tend to be pretty old, whereas US houses are new, but this is a total guess!.
UK are more eccentric (but I suppose after watch Britains got talent and us has got talent, we are pretty equal haha!.!. but I still say we are barmier)
Macs haven't quite taken over yet!.
Thats all I can think off! Pretty different though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

We British like to knock the French and Germans, but in my experience we have infinitely more in common with those cultures than we ever have with America!.
Don't even know where to start - there's so many differences!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
