Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Although Western propaganda called them 'Huns', this was long before Nazism, so Germany was really more like any other European country!. The exception here, though, was that the German government was very militaristic!. This was largely because of her origin in a situation very similar to ancient Sparta - The first german state (about 1700 AD), ruled by the Hohenzollerns of the Berlin area, was actually led by a small group of Germans trying to control a group of Poles that was about 10 times as large!. (Similar to the Spartans, who were surrounded by helots who outnumbered them 10 to 1!.) The first germans (actually called the Prussians then) responded to this out-numbering by focusing on their army!.!.!.This focus on the army continued, even when Germany became very large!. Did the Allies really hate the Germans, after WWI!? France did, as she wanted payback for the humiliating Franco-German war of 1870, and so sought to enforce humiliating terms in the Versailles treaty, 1918!. In Canada, many German-founded towns, like Berlin, Ontario, changed their names to look more 'British'; and bitter memories remain of the first poison-gas attacks (first victims were Canadian, at Paschendale)!. The US didn't want to get in line for this humiliating of Germany, so she waited to sign a separate peace with Germany, in 1921!.
