Well, first of all, there were no repayment requirements for Lend-Lease materials, and the US benefitted in the form of establishing bases rent-free in British (and Chinese and French) soil!. However, the program ended September 2, 1945, and equipment sent to Britain after that time was charged for at discounted rates!. In total, the British repaid some $83 million, with the final payment coming in 2006!.

More to the point, however, is the fact that you seem to have the wrong idea about US involvement in the European war!. The US didn't get involved "to help" Britain!. Four days after Pearl Harbor, Germany delcared war upon the US, and so we were at war with Germany!. As such, we allied ourselves with the other nations at war with Germany, most notably Britain (and the British commonwealth) and the Soviet Union!. Keep in mind, too, that the British were also fighting the Japanese in Burma and India and lesewhere!. Should they have billed us for their help!? Allies at war against a common enemy don't bill each other! The loans which the UK repaid in 2006 were for equipment sent to Britain after the end of the war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Originally, FDR was prepared to scratch the loans from the 1941 Lend-Lease Act given to Britain once the war was over, but this was only a verbal promise given to Churchill and it wasn't followed through due to his death!.

Plus Britain elected a new socialist government in 1946, sending shockwaves through the US government who, with the new threat of communism, immediately called the loans with interest!.
This would have bankrupted Britain as the Marshall Plan (the rebuilding of Europe) would not help them for another 8 years, unlike Germany who recieved assistance straight away!.
Britain managed to bargain payment by installments - the final payment coming in December 2006 reaching a total of £28 trillion or $56 trillion!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Look up "lend, lease program"!. It was money, it was more of rights to put military bases in areas under their control!.

We actually loaned them lots of money after the war under the Marshall Plan to rebuild their economy and the rest of Europe's!. Our economic properity was tied to their well being!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
