Why did the Reformation occur!? Because Henry VIII did not have a male heir and wanted to divorce his 1st wife and remarry!. Henry 's actions made himself the head of the English church - a position which would bolster royal power!.

Most important was the dissolution of the Monasteries!. The Catholic Church owned between one-fifth and one-third of the land in all England!. The King realized that he could bind the gentry and nobility to himself and his heirs (referred to as the Royal Supremacy) by selling to them some of huge acreage that comprised Church lands!. No one who bought these former church lands would ever support returning them to the church -- they would always support Henry and the Tudor Monarchy!. Plus, Henry kept the lion's share of the monasteries for himself, was paid for selling other lands to the aristocracy and used monies he received to strengthen royal patronage everywhere in his realm!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
