Washington got the gig by being the richest man in America!. He got that way, not by hard work or keen insight of the market, but the old fashioned way - he married Martha Custis, the richest widow in the country! Lincoln worked hard, educated himself mostly, and then put together a coalition of business and statesman to help create a viable third party: the Republicans!. He came into office during the absolutely worst crisis possible, the rendering of the nation, and when he left so suddenly, the country was once again whole!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Having studied both extensively, I can't choose between the two!. I admire both for different reasons!. Washington for his deeply embedded sense of personal honesty, his refusal to give up when all seemed lost, his intense anxiety over making the right choices, and his profound humility (he had his vain side, but he was also deeply humble, a mild tension that made him charming to many)!. He was the "indispensible" man!. Lincoln, too, for his dogged perseverance, his personal anguish over the nation's blood-letting, his homespun and practical wisdom, his ability to navigate troubled waters!. His humble appearance masked enormous ambition!. When he entered the presidency, he was between a rock and a hard place!. Politically, this "country bumpkin" was the shrewdest of all!. George or Abe what!? George was a man who men just naturally followed!. Abe was determined to save the union no matter what!. As for freeing the slaves, Abe didnt do much there beyond the all out effort to save the union!. Both could be called the right man at the right time!. But that could be arguable too!. Despite the fact that Washington brought life to democracy, it was Lincoln who freed the slaves and brought diversity to America!.
