The Meiji Restoration , also known as the Meiji Ishin, Revolution, or Renewal, was a chain of events that led to enormous changes in Japan's political and social structure!. It occurred in the latter half of the 19th century, a period that spans both the late Edo period (often called Late Tokugawa shogunate) and the beginning of the Meiji Era!. When the US of A , through Admiral Perry, forced its entry (i!.e!., invaded) Imperial Japan in the late 1800s, the Japanese political system was wise enough to realize that they had to modernize so as to be enabled to defend themselves from other such "entries" by other nations as their previous tactics of isolationism had proven unsuccessful!.

Unfortunately, this was undertaken at break neck speed both from the stand point of necessity and fear!. The Japanese society and culture did not have adequate time to adjust and incorporate the new changes in such a manner as to maintain some of the major elements of said culture!. Loosing its "self", Japan became a lesser Western nation with its former sense of identity destroyed!.

Such has continued into the present era!. Japan now has elder abuse (previously unheard of), homeless (formerly unthinkable), unemployment (unimaginable), pollution (breathing in Tokyo can be harmful to ones health), rising crime rates, especially among juveniles, the Yakuza, and corporate crime as well as all of the other multitude of woes with which the Western nations, such as the USofA are beset!.
