Question: What was the speed of a sixth rate frigate in 1800!?

Speed of any ship depended on the design, age, and condition!. It was also luck!. There are recorded instances of accidents improving a ships sailing qualities and vice versa!. On average American and French ships were generally faster than British!. But it varied too much to be sure!. One reason the American frigate Essex was captured in the War of 1812 was she had been on a long cruise and was not as fast or handy as she normally would have been!.!.!.!.But back then ships that were identical often sailed differently and just changing a ships rigging could vastly improve its sailing qualities!. Actually many ships were over sparred or over rigged and just cutting down on this helped!. Others needed more sail!. There were too many factors involved for a standard!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
