Well, depends how you look at it!. Don't believe in the "Ozzie and Harriet" or "Father Knows Best" image from those 1950s tv shows!. Obviously they had the pros and cons!. I think the conformity was due because of the recent 1930s depression and World War II just a decade earlier!. And people just wanted to go back to a normal peaceful life!. No wonder that conformity, I can understand!. But we can't forget the Cold War has just started, the "Red Scare" with spies [Rosenberg case], the atomic bomb, and its bigger "brother" the hydrogen bomb, mass television, political persecutions of dissidents like "McCarthysm", and the fear that the end of the world was just around the corner!. No wonder the "baby boomers" grew up cynical in the following 1960s!. I can understand that, too!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Joker gave you some good examples of the 50s!. It may have seemed "the best" to the youth of that period because of the development of Rock 'n Roll and the new products, like transistor radios, that were being developed!. It was also the decade of conformity, from housing to dress!. The major group that protested the conformity were the Beatniks, but they were a small literary group and did not have the over-all effect on society that the Hippies would have in the 60s!. The site below will have links to both decades!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's a matter of opinion, suburbanization was strong and the idea American Dream became reality to some!. However, there was the dark side of the Cold War and growing aggravation of blacks which lead to the civil rights movement!. Then again, the civil rights movement is something that is recognized as the best part of the 50's as it lead to cultural awareness, which spread to the 60's and its sex revolutions!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In the UK at least things were getting back to normal after the war!. Houses were being built to replace slums and war damage was being repaired!. Food rationing finally ended and if you wanted a job you could find one quite easily, as there was almost full employment!.

The schools were geared up to produce workers for factories to produce goods 'for export only', to earn dollars to pay for imports (still had exchange controls then)!. University places were still hard to come by for those without money or influence!.

Foreign holidays were coming into reach of the average working man!. Consumer items such as TV's, fridges etc were coming down in price due to mass production!.

Not a bad time to be alive, particularly if like my family the 20's and 30's were very hard times!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That is really a matter of opinion!.
I personally think it was a great era, but I don't know about the best in our history!. There were highs and lows as with every decade!.
But hey, the 1950's are pretty much considered the birth of rock and roll!!! : )Www@QuestionHome@Com

Not so much for women to be honest, since we were more useful as homemaker than a businesswoman, of course they were female singers and more but we were too reserved!. I like the 50's because of their music most of all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
