After 900 AD, silks were available, but pricey!. Usually only royalty had them!. Velvets and brocades came later!. Egyptian cotton was also in demand and, of course, they wore linen and wool!.

One of the universal garments for women was a long tabard!. It was worn over the gown to protect it while they were doing certain tasks!. The lady of the castle might wear one while she inspected the kitchens and tasted the bread dough, then discard it for another while she oversaw the clearing of the middens (sewers)!. She didn't change clothes during the day, but she did change tabards!. It reduced the number of stains on her clothes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

During medieval times nobility and the wealthy would wear rare fabrics (Linens, wools, and silks)!. Fabric's with bright colors (that required special dyes like "royal purple" and deep reds, blues and bright yellows) would increase the cost as well!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

By the middle of the 15th century, silk production was well established in Italy and a large trade developed throughout Europe!. This was the source for much of the wealth of the Medici family (in addition to banking)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
