Question: What if the Native Americans were never overthrown!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
US would be a backwater barbaric place!. Native Americans for the most part were not as romanticized peaceful!. Part of the reason they were so easily defeated was because they fought themselves so hard as well!. Often the Europeans didn't even have to do much, since most of the male warriors of the tribe were already dead from one of the constant wars with a neighboring tribe!.

One only needs to look at events such as the massacres of Jamestown!. Or the the pillage of Dakota!. Where hundreds of innocent people with children were murdered and often had their mutiliated by certain tribes!.

I'm not denying that there weren't peaceful or pacifist!. Merely to think the US would be stable or peaceful is a delusion!. It would be a very brutal, unstable place!. With many warring factions, with battles being commonplace!. As well as ethnic cleansings of defeated tribes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think the assimilation would have been slow, but definitely there!. The near "cultural genocide" brought about by the Carlisle Indian School movement, would have been lessened by parents choosing to send their children to white schools to help prepare the children for the future!.

There would have been a great deal of bloodshed, instigated by both sides!. I suspect the elders were aware of the problems brought about by contact with Europeans!. What may have seemed like a coincidence at first, if a white trader comes in to a Chippewa village and one of his companions is "a little under the weather" then all of a sudden, a week or so later, the children and the elderly begin dying of high fevers and have spots all over themselves, the shamans will realize that it wasn't a coincidence, though it wasn't intentional either, just someone with an illness they had never seen before!. It doesn't take a genius to realize that these people may not be the kind you should be dealing with!.

For lack of a better word, you might even call it a curse!.

Then if traders began trying to visit the villages, the warriors would be sent out to keep them away!. It might have been a kind of quarantine!.

There are written accounts of leaders cautioning their young men against one of the worst things Europeans brought them, alcohol!. Both Pontiac and Tecumseh were promoters of the idea that the things that came from the whites were bad things, even the iron pots and the rifles, because they drew people away from the old way of life!. It indicates an almost instinctive aversion to the things that were, sometimes almost passively, dangerous to the natives: alcohol and disease!.

Gradually, over the last 400 years, people would have more contact between groups, and immunity would increase to European diseases, lessening the threat!.

There were conficts over territory, these weren't limited to cowboys and indians, but included abolitionists and slaveholders in Kansas, the Union and Confederacy in the Civil War, and New Yorkers and Canadians in the Aroostook war!. There was a lot more between the Lakota, the Blackfeet, the Osage and practically everyone else!. If you look at the historical record, both written and oral traditions, the three groups seemed to be fighting some of their neighbors much of the time!.

Eventually, cooler heads would prevail!. Men like Red Cloud and Thunder Rolling from the Mountains are evidence of this!.
It seems obvious that war is a no-win situation, after the fact, but the young men would fight because they could prove themselves, and because they enjoyed it!.

Gradually, there might have been stronger leaders emerge, with the kind of "presence" that drew their entire people to them, rather than the independent streak that seems to run through our native population!. As it was, we saw that for every Red Cloud there was a Crazy Horse!.

I suspect that gradually, the natives would be drawn into a merged society, probably of a democratic nature!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Then we would be in a happy community what native americans, and United states would be smaller!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
