In the West, there was no single, set palace for emperors, like the White House!. Usually, an emperor would build a palace to his own tastes!. (An exception mighthave been Marcus Aurelius, who spent most of his reign out on the battlefield!.) It was not even required of the emperor to live in Rome!. Tiberius, for example, after an attempted plot against him in Rome made him paranoid - chose to live on the isle of Capri, and made his will known to ROme via signal from a lighthouse!.

In the Eastern Roman empire (capital was Constantinople), the emperor lived in the Sacred Palace!. This slowly fell apart, until one wall remained, which around the late 1900s was demolished - to make room for the Berlin-Bagdad railway!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The emperors had residences, which were gradually increased in size and opulence as each successive emperor got more greedy and grandiose!.

The biggest palace of any Roman emperor was Nero's!. Nero built a palace complex known as the Domus Aurea in an area cleared by the fire!. This included lush artificial landscapes and a 30 meter statue of himself, the Colossus of Nero!. The size of this complex is debated (from 100 to 300 acres)!. To find the necessary funds for the reconstruction, tributes were imposed on the provinces of the empire!.

Upon completion of the palace Nero is alleged to have remarked, "Now I can finally live like a human being!"Www@QuestionHome@Com
