Hi there,

I thought I knew my English Civil War history but obviously not as I had to go Googling for this one!. Thanks for making me find out!

Anyway, Oliver Cromwell was a Protestant Puritan Parliamentarian!. In 1641, long before Cromwell gained power, there was an uprising of the Irish Catholics against the English and Scottish Protestants that had settled in Ireland!. English newsheets were full of lurid descriptions of hideous massacres of the Protestants by the Catholics!. One of these was an incident at the River Bann at Portadown where Protestants were allegedly massacred!.

Later, in 1649, after King Charles was defeated in both Civil Wars, Cromwell set out wioth the New Model Army to 'pacify' Ireland!. Drogheda was one of the main Catholic garrison towns held against him!. His forces stormed the town and massacred many of the inhabitants!. One Catholic commander, the Englishman Sir Arthur Aston, allegedly had his brain beaten out with his own wooden leg!

Therefore one could say the massacre at Drogheda was 'in revenge' for the massacre at Portadown!. It's probably way more complicated than that!

Note - be very careful in the use of sources for this period in history as many of them are blatant propaganda!. also due to the recent troubles in Northern Ireland the various communities have vested interests in portraying the history in their own ways!.
