Lester Joseph Gillis, alias "Baby Face" Nelson, was born in Chicago, December 6, 1908, the son of Joseph and Mary Gillis!. His father committed suicide during Lester's teenage years!. Lester married Helen Wawryzniak (or variant spellings) and they had two children, Ronald and Darlene!.

During their life on the run, Nelson and Helen were sometimes accompanied by their children!. At other times the kids were living with relatives!.

Nelson of course died of his wounds on November 27, 1934, following a gun battle at Barrington, Illinois in which he killed FBI agents Sam Cowley and Herman Hollis!.

Helen served a short prison sentence for harboring her husband!. She never remarried and lived in quiet obscurity in the Chicago area until her death in 1987!. Lester "Baby Face Nelson" Gillis and his wife Helen are both buried at St!. Joseph's Cemetery in the Chicago suburb of River Forest!.
