Depending on how old your great-great grandfather was (perhaps 1800s), then charcoal, succulent strawberries (which some people still use to whiten their teeth), a mixture of myrhh powder, honey, and a pinch of sage, and sometimes even cuttlefish bone with different oils!.

Interesting question, btw!. Makes me wary about traveling to the past (heh heh)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My Grandfather said they would also cut of a small branch of a tree and chew on the end to soften it up, then run the end over their teeth!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A mixture of baking soda and peroxide!.

A little trivia!.
The ancient Egyptians actually swished their own urine!.
It whitened their teeth, but it distroyed the enamel!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

baking soda and a small twig from a birch tree - chew the end of the twig to make it pointy (and the bark tastes really good - but the baking soda is EVIL!!!!!)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Baking soda!? Crushed shells, too, I think!. Sometimes, they chewed on stiff plants, if I remember correctly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Some people used soap!. Others used all sorts of mild abrasives!. Powdered chalk was one!. But brushing without tootpaste (or tooth powder) is quite effective!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
