Slavery developed in the southern colonies because of need!. The development of labor intensive cash crop farming (rice, indigo, tobacco and cotton) led to the need for a large labor force!. Initially, Native Americans were used, but they usually died from diseases or simply escaped because of their knowledge of the land!. Slaves from Africa were brought in because they were already exposed to the diseases of the Old World, and they were not familiar enough with the land to escape effectively!. All this begs the question, why did the farm owners not simply hire someone instead of going through the expense of transporting slaves across the Atlantic!. The answer is simple, cheap land!. No, free person would work on a farm for someone else when they could simply go further west and get a farm of their own!.

Religion was th key for the development of six of the original thirteen colonies!. Massachusetts was founded by the Pilgrims and Puritans!. Rhode Island, Vermont, and Connecticut was founded for religious freedom for the Puritans!. Pennsylvania was founded by the Quakers!. Maryland for religious freedom for Catholics!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well Slavery developed in the southern colonies because of plantation, indentured servants, which were ppl from England that got their trip to America paid for in exchange for working for whoever paid for their trip to America weren't doing the job!. so slaves were more feasible because they were slavers forever and wouldn't be set free like the indentured servants (once their contract was finished the i!. servant was free!. The southern colonies depended on tobacco and rice as their main products!.
religion played a role in the north more than it did in the south(most ppl that went to the southern colonies did so for financial gain rather than religious freedom!. The Puritans wanted to escape persecution in England and came to the Americas, mainly the colony of Massachusetts!. Penn was established for Quakers, Maryland was free but mainly for catholics and Jews!. Rhode Island was a colony for convicts!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
