In one of the several thousand inns or guest houses (very difering in quality) which took care of the travellers, traders, pilgrims, etc!. In some cases he could stay at the guest houses located near temples or the Library!.

If he was a real important guy he could stay at the house of a friend or business associate- or be recommended to any such a person!. This is how "letters of introduction" or "recommendation" came to existWww@QuestionHome@Com

Probably with friends!. Those that had the means to travel could afford to stay in inns, or had connections within the city!. It was also customary for strangers to take you in if you were of renown!. Peasants arriving in the city with nothing would just sleep outside, or with animals in extreme cases!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Egypt was a tourist destination back then too and so there would have been plenty of inns or hotel equivalents for people to stay at!. There have been inns and boarding houses ever since people got smart enough to build a spare bedroom! Travelers who were polititians or learned scholars would stay with other high society members while traveling!.
