Question: Were any German war criminals executed before 1946!?
I'm working on a story set in 1945 Berlin, and I'm trying to find out if there were any executions of German war criminals prior to the Nuremberg trials in the autumn of 1946!.

Yes!. I have done a simple web-search using the german search terms "kriegsverbrecher (= war criminals)" + 1945 + hingerichtet (= executed)" and found several examples!. The first Belsen trial (named after the concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen) for instance took place in front of a british military court in September, October and November 1945 in Luneburg!. The death sentences resulting from this trial were executed in december 1945!. see http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Belsen_Tria!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your question begs us to consider whether or not Erwin Rommel would have been considered a war criminal by the Allied powers!. The fact that he was killed before the end of the war probably was what saved him from prosecution!. The heads of the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe were both prosecuted at Nuremburg!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There was incidents of guards and trustees being beaten to death by freed prisoners in the concentration camps while US soldiers stood by and did nothing to stop them!.

Does that count as an execution !?Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Russians probably did kill some out of hand!.!.!.but, jeez I don't know for sure!. The Allies probably waited!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
